Time Maximization In Sales

Getting The Most Out of Each Moment

Segment 4:   Tools and Tips to Make Time Maximization Permanent

In the final segment in this series on maximizing our time in sales, I'm going to address probably the hardest task of all, and that is how to make these changes "stick" over the long-haul.

Learning strategies and ideas for better planning and maximizing our day is a bit like the first time you try the Atkins diet: wow the results happen quickly!  You think, "Hey, I'm eating a dozen eggs and five steaks a day and the weight is falling off!"   For those who've tried the diet, the results are usually quite dramatic and it's all very exciting...until about two or three months into it -- when you can't take another piece of cheese or bacon or a hamburger without the bun, and you're CRAVING a Cinna-monster (okay, okay I've been on Atkins a time or two).  It's tough to live your life that way over the long haul.

The same will hold true with these time maximization strategies -- the results will be dramatic and it's all very exciting...until about two or three months into it and you're tired of doing what you need to do to stay on top of planning your day, week, month, year and life.

Just like the Atkins diet, if you want to live and think a different way forever, you've got to find  ways to make it work for you so that you're not bored or so oppressed that you'll be miserable.

Some Steps We Can Take to Live With Time Maximization Forever:

  • Don't go overboard right away -- seek a compromise position you can live with over the long-haul.  Instead of setting a goal like, "I'm going to get up and spend an hour a day planning every second of my day",  it may be something you can do over a few weeks or months, but will you do it over the long-haul?  If not, then ratchet it down a bit and come up with something you can do everyday.

  • Revisit the program once a month  -- when the beginning of the month rolls around, or at some point of the month you can remember naturally, just stop and take a look around, acknowledge your successes, celebrate how far you've come and realize that this new way of being has moved from being a "program" (or diet), and is now just the way you are...your new way of being.

  • Find motivation somewhere -- there were reasons why you decided to get your act together in the first place regarding better time management, right?  Was it because you were tired of being late or forgetting things?  Were you always behind and never getting enough of the right things done?  What motivated you to change initially?  Those thoughts, or those situations, are what we need to think about when we need motivation to keep going on the program

    • Make a list of the bad things you've left behind

      • I used to be sloppy

      • I used to be late to every meeting

      • I used to make lists and never accomplish have the tasks

    • Make a list of the good things you want to achieve

      • I am going to be a model for efficiency so I can spend more time outside the office

      • I am going to get more done in one day than most people do in two or three

      • I am going to find a way to double my income, while investing 25% less time

  • Tell someone what you're doing and where you're going -- look for someone you trust, someone who will encourage you and not be judgmental, and let them in on what you're doing and where you're going.  This person can act as a sounding board, cheerleader, coach, disciplinarian and general support as you go through the ups and downs of long-haul change.

    • "I want to tell you what I've been doing and this path I'm on to maximizing my day...can I tell you why I did it in the first place...and what I hope to achieve over the long haul?"

Like all life-changing disciplines, time maximization is much more than a program, it's a different way of life, a new way of thinking...a new way of breathing and walking around.
